They have a tree house in a big tree which hangs over some empty ground in Castle Rock. It is a kind of club,although it has no name. There are five or six regulars who come and go. They play cards for money in the tree house. The sides of the tree house are made out of wood, and the roof is metal. Besides playing cards, the club is a good place to smoke cigarettes. There has been a secret space under the floor to hide cigarette packets when somebody’s father decides to do the Me And My Son Are The Best routine and visits them. Teddy, Chris and Gordon are in the club that morning, complaining about school being so near and playing cards and telling the same jokes they had told a hundred times before. Teddy laughs his peculiar laugh at the jokes. He is strange. He can’t see ver well. One day when he was eight, his father got angry with him for breaking a plate. Teddy’s dad took him over to the big oven at the back of the kitchen and pushed the side of Teddy’s head down against one of the burner plates. Then he called the hospital an told them to come and fetch his son. Teddy’s dad is in Togus which is a special hospital where they send soldiers who are mad from the war. In spite of what his dad had done to him, Teddy is proud of him and visits him in Togus every week. In the middle of a game of cards, they hear someone coming fast up the ladder. It is Vern Tessio, one of the other regulars. “Wait till you hear this, guys?” he said. “Hear what?” Gordon asks. “Can you all camp out tonight? I mean, if you tell your families we’re going to camp in my back field?” Vern is looking at them in excitement.
