ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON TREASURE ISLAND MAIN CHARACTERS Jim HAWKINS: He was a young boy who took the map of Treasure Island and went to find it with the others. He was so good and clever boy and he was so brave to save his and the others lives. Bill, the Captain: He was an old seaman. He was a tall, strong man with a cut across one cheek. He had the map of Treasure Island. Black Dog: He had three fingers on his left hand. He wasn’t good man. He wanted the map to find the treasure. He was one of the pirates. Blind Pew: He was a blind man and he was feeling his way with a stick. He was a pirate before he lost his sight. He wasn’t a good man. Dr.LIVESEY: He was a good and reliable man. He went to find the treasure with Jim, Squire and the others. He always helped them and fought against pirates with good men. Squire TRELAWNEY: He was a big, tall man with a red face. He was so good and he was a little credulous man. Long John SILVER: He was a tall, strong man and his left leg was cut off above the knee and he walked with a crutch. He wasn’t a good man. He was one of the pirates. He was so clever and he had wanted to find the treasure. Captain SMOLLETT: He was a good man. He was a first-class seaman. Ben GUNN: He was marooned in Treasure Island. He was a good man. He wanted to help them. SUMMARY OF THE BOOK One day, the old seaman came to stay at Jim’s father owned the Admiral Benbow Inn at Black Hill Cove with his sea chest. He was a tall, strong man. He has a cut across one cheek. The inn was on the cliffs above Black Hill Cove and was a wild, lonely place but the seaman seemed to like it. He said to them that they could call him Captain. He asked if any seamen had gone along the road. At first Jim and Jim's father thought he wanted friends of his own kind but then they began to understand that there was a different reason. He told Jim to watch for a seaman with one leg and to let him know the moment when a man like that appeared. One January morning, the captain got up early and walked down to the beach. It was cold winter’s day with the sun still low in the sky. A man came to inn when the captain was out walking. He wore a sailor’s short sword by his side and he had only three fingers on his left hand. He asked Jim “ Is this table for my old friend, Bill?” Jim told him he didn’t know his friend Bill and the breakfast was for a man who they called him Captain. “Does he have sword cut on his face?” he asked. “Yes” Jim said. “That’s Bill,” said the man. He waited until the captain came back. The captain wasn’t pleased to see him. The wanted to talk and then they told me to go away. There were more shouts and then the sound of table crashing over then out ran Black Dog with blood running down his shoulder. In a few seconds, he had disappeared from sight. The captain watched him go then said, “Jim quick! Bring me rum.” Jim realized he was feeling ill and ran to fetch rum. Then he heard the captain’s falling and hurried back to find him on the floor. At that moment Dr Livesey arrived to see Jim’s father. He looked at the captain and said to Jim’s mother his heart couldn’t take much more of that. He had told the captain drinking rum would kill him and it nearly had. Later that day, the captain and Jim were talking. The captain asked him how long he had to lie in his bed. Jim told him “A week,” He said he couldn’t do that. They would have the black spot on him by then. “What is the black spot?” Jim asked. “That’s a message. If I get the black spot you go to doctor and tell him to bring a crowd of law officers and a local judge to the inn. They can catch Flint’s crew at the Admiral Benbow. I was Flint’s first ship’s officer, and I’m the only one who knows the place. He told when he was dying. But don’t call the law unless they give me the black spot or if you see the seaman with one leg.” That night, Jim’s father died so he had no time to worry about the captain.
