A TALE OF TWO CITIES AUTHOR: CHARLES DICKENS (1812 -1870) He was born in Landport, Portsmouth as a son of a poor official. His childhood had went trough the troubles. In 1823 his family settled down in London but his father was arrested. In 1827 he started to work in the notary public's office and learnt what stenography was. It was probably the turning point to learn stenography. When he was working in Morning Herald newspaper, he was young and hard working. His first text was written in this paper in 1835. So he had achieved the success by passing the worst years of his life. Dickens married in 1836. But he could not find the real happiness and divorced. He found plenty of story characters in his own life and decided to write stories. So you can see Charles Dickens' life in his stories. When he died in 1870 in Rochester, there was a half story called ''Mystery of Edwin Drood''. MAIN CHARACTERS: Doctor Alexandre MANETTE: He is the main character of the story which comes true around him cruelly. He has been kept in a prison as One Hundred and Fifth prisoner in the North Tower in France. He has been kept there so long that he sometimes forgets even his real name. He is French. Lucie MANETTE: She is Dr. Manette's daughter. Her mother was an English young lady but she died afterwards his husband, Dr. Manette disappeared and Lucie was brought back to England. So
